Seedling, Leeks, King Richard
Description
Gently separate out seedlings from one another in singles or small clumps. Plant 1 to 4 seedlings 6-8 " apart. Singly planted seedlings will grow larger and thicker, clumps will grow into thinner fingerling leeks. Harvest leeks when they've reached desired size, by gently lopsening soil and pulling. This usually occurs in mid to late summer from a spring planting, and during late fall-early winter from a summer planting. Hill soil around base of plants as they grow to blanch the shanks. Keep your leeks watered well, and add compost before planting into loose soil for best results. Leeks will tolerate partial shade. Harden off and plant outside after nighttime temperatures are consistently above freezing. Grows well in a container or in the ground.
