Ground Cherry / Husk Cherry
Description
One of our favorite crops to grow! They are like candy covered with little papery wrappers. Ground cherries (also known as husk cherries) are sweet, flavorful fruits covered by a papery husk. Fruits ripen in the husks and fall to the ground, which is when they are ready to eat. Plants are prolific and once they start fruiting, they continue until frost. Some people think ground cherries have a pineapple-y flavor. Fruits can be eaten raw or turned into jams and preserves. All seedlings are grown using Certified Organic potting mix from Vermont Compost. Seeds are selected because they are heirloom, rare, organic and/or disease resistant varieties. Photo and seeds from Johnny's.
