You may have heard about these beans, though we've never put them in the CSA shares. While we don't have enough room to grow enough to include in CSA shares, we do have a limited quantity to sell as seeds for those who would like to grow these amazing beans at home.
We have been growing these seeds organically for about 2 decades. The majority of the original seed stock came from an acquaintance from Korea who was growing these on her farm. We don't know the exact variety of these beans, but they have attributes similar to Scarlet Runner Beans, Sadie's Horse Beans, and Insuk's Wang Kong Beans. Seeds range in color from ivory white to deep brown to deep purple/black with many combinations in between.
Our farm is located in Oregon on the east side of the Willamette Valley up against the foothills of the Cascades. The beans are vigorous growers and start well despite cool, wet spring weather. A sturdy trellis is required as these beans will easily grow 6 to 10 feet tall.
When small the pods may be cooked and eaten as green beans, larger beans may be used as fresh shell beans, and mature beans may be used as dried beans. The blossoms are edible, as well as the tuberous roots which are perennial in tropical environments. Another feature of this plant is that hummingbirds are attracted to the beautiful red and white flowers.
We have a limited quantity of 2024 harvested beans for sale. 25 seeds will plant a row of about 10 to 15 feet. To harvest dry beans, you'll want to get these in the ground by the beginning of June. We try to include a complete range of colors in each order.
