ABOUT US
We moved back to NC in 2008 with 2 little boys, and a dream to move to the country and start farming.
In early 2010 we met an Amish family and in the process of purchasing a cow from them, were offered the opportunity to move to their huge farmhouse and take over their farmers markets with goat dairy, cow dairy, beef, eggs, and garden produce. That summer with our 3 little boys we lived in the Amish farmhouse and made connections with some amazing people that supported us, and pushed us to continue offering farm products that heal and nourish, vs. mainstream/traditional farming.
This gave us the foundation and passion for regenerative farming, and upon moving to a cousins ranch in the fall of 2010, we actively began implementing these practices with our herds of dairy goats, herd of cattle, and poultry management. Per the Amish family’s practice, we primarily were buying beef steers to finish out on our farm as Grassfed, Grass-Finished, for the next few years, and slowly grew our herd of dairy goats to over 20.
A few years of maintaining their private farmers markets in Greensboro and Durham, (and a few daughters later…) we sold our herd of dairy goats and invested more in beef cattle and their intensive pasture management/rotation. We eventually became a grass-finished beef source for the Raleigh Farm-To-Fork, where our products were lumped in with other farms’. After considerable issues with management there, and finding other farms had unsavory practices with their beef production, we elected to break with all of them and become an independent farm, going back to our original farm name and product label "Hawkfield Manor”. Heather’s maiden name is “Mayfield”, and thus the legacy we wished to pass to our children was “Hawkfield”. We had a logo designed and published, and could finally take pride in what our practices had produced - broodstock thriving on lush pastures with returning native grasses from 6 years of intense Mob Grazing, and wooded areas being transformed into silvopasture.
In 2020 we began selling cuts direct to customers again, acquiring our Meat Handlers Permit with NCDA, and working with our local county extension agency to get all of our beef labeled per our practices. In 2022 we moved to our new homestead down the road from our previous home, but due to constant losses of our meat chickens, we decided to no longer raise broilers and only keep laying hens that would be able to remain in pastures with our guardian dogs.
Its been an amazing 5 years of building various markets locally in Roxboro, Wake Forest, Durham, and keeping little shops in the area stocked with our products.
GRASSFED, GRASS-FINISHED BEEF
We have goals in our cattle breeding program that we are VERY excited about, to produce stock that will thrive on our regenerative methods of grazing and foraging, be more parasite resistant, and have optimal reproductive health. We primarily process beef from calves born and raised on our farm, from our children’s herd stock within our herd, local private farmers with our approved and labeled practices, with a percentage being sourced at our small cattle auction, where many of our friends buy and sell. In 2020 we decided we didn’t want to be like other farms that outsource 100% of their beef cattle from other farms and auction 6 weeks prior to processing (the withdrawal period per Grassfed, Grassfinished laws), and we began the slow but intentional switch to a goal of having 100% beef we process, be born and raised on our own farm. Every year we are coming closer to that goal!! Unlike other NC farms, only a small percentage of our calves are sourced at auction, after which they are kept for a minimum of 6 months with our herd. In the field currently, we have incredible genetics of Angus Cross & Charolais Cross, which are currently producing calves from our beautiful Highpark Bull. We have strategically bred in lines of hearty heritage breeds of Normande & Highland to produce a "Hawkfield Manor" beef herd that is ideally suited for SilvoPasture, foraging, and pasture rotation.
GOAT HERDSHARE DAIRY
In 2023 two of our children developed a sensitivity to our cow Cleopatra's certified A2A2 raw milk. Heather decided to plunge right in and acquire dairy goats to produce milk for not only our family, but offer herdshares as well. This will be her first FULL kidding season, spring 2025 and we can’t wait to see what our ladies produce, and offer more herdshares on a consistent basis.
POULTRY
We have almost always had at least a few hens on our farm, and last year we hatched out multiple batches to give us lovely olive and easter egger hens that are now laying beautifully for us. No, we cannot guarantee our feed is organic or nonGMO. However our hens are “Pasture Raised” and roam freely all over our farm and only a portion of their diet is the feed we supplement. They have a regular healthy diet of bugs and vegetation, as well as eating scraps from our families table (Yep…that includes our grassfed beef!), and during molt they are given the leftovers of all our bone broth batches.
This year, we have acquired a Crested Cream Legbar rooster and plan to provide Easter and Olive Egger chicks and hatching eggs locally. We have other poultry news developing and will announce soon!
