At Granja Las Aguilas, our chickens are raised on pasture with free access to organic sprouted grains, organic meal feed (certified-organic corn, wheat, soy, and sunflower seeds), and fresh water. Out in the field, they consume bugs and plants like alfalfa, lambsquarters, amaranth, and clover, turning all that protein into flavorful chicken and chicken fat! Combined with fresh air and sunshine, pastured local chickens beat out store-bought chickens any day.
We keep 50-75 chickens in a covered and secure pens up to 200 square feet. We move them every day or two, depending on what the ground is like where they are. Our chickens are a patented "jumbo broiler" from Sunnyside Hatchery in Beaver Dam WI, and are similar to the hybrid known as "Cornish Cross" but more alert and agile than any CornishX from other hatcheries we've tried. They simply have great genetics - no health problems, put on thick fatty skin, and juicy breasts and legs!
Finished chickens range from 3 to 6 lbs, and cost $16 to $33 each. They come plucked, cleaned, whole with neck inside the cavity, vacuum-sealed and frozen - unless otherwise requested as fresh (raw and chilled), and only within a week of processing. They are safely and humanely processed on our farm under the P.L. 90-492 Producers/Grower Exemption.
You pay a reservation fee of $5 per bird now, and we will invoice you by email after we process and weigh the chickens. At this time, we plan to process chickens monthly starting at the end of May.
Also feet and organs are available from chickens processed on-farm. They come frozen in a ziplock bag. Please contact us in advance of processing if you want a specific number of feet or organs. Otherwise they will come in groups of 10-20. For on-farm processing, pricing for feet and organs are as follows:
$1.00 charge for each pair of heart and liver saved (if you don't want both, we could do 2 hearts/$1 or vice versa)
$2.00 charge for each gizzard saved (clean and rinsed)
$2.00 charge for each pair of feet saved (clean and rinsed)

We use organic methods and certified organic inputs (e.g. fertilizer, animal feed, etc), but Granja Las Aguilas is not currently certified organic. We (Silvano and Gina) have between us over a decade of experience in organic agriculture.
Other environmental practices:
- We protect our nearby waterways from livestock with a large setback (distance) and high-tensile fence that separates our pastures from the wetlands bordering our farm. We see dozens of varieties of birds and other creatures gracing our wetlands! Please contact us to visit for photography and general relaxation.
- We practice rotational and managed grazing for the health of our soil and animals.
- We have lots of milkweed and "weeds" beneficial to pollinators and insects, that we try to let stand whenever possible. Even the stand of milkweed that stubbornly inhabits the garden!
- We are constantly learning about new methods in regenerative agriculture, and how we can improve our processes.
