Hybrid Hazelnuts - a hardy shrub with vibrant foliage AND produces quality food for people and for wildlife.
These hazels were started from seed, germinated and grown in mycorrhizal inoculated soil in air-prune beds to encourage robust, fibrous root systems. 1yo plants are approx. 18" tall and vigorous thanks to improvements to our growing system.
Seed sourced from a Rensselaer County planting. Parent genetics come from a well-known perennial agriculture breeding program in the Upper Midwest. The parent lines were selected for exceptional cold hardiness, disease resistance, early production, and large annual yields of nuts. Moderate production expected in years 4-5 w/ full production in years 7+.
Shrubby growth habit is similar to a vigorous lilac with 10'~15' maximum height. Shoots can be cut back on ~6 year cycles to yield wood for tool handles etc. and encourage vigor.
Recommended spacings: 6'-8' centers in rows 10' apart for maximum harvest access; on 2' centers for a vibrant deer resistant hedge; or plant in 2'-4' centers in clumps for optimal bird habitat.
Hardy to zone 4, probably zone 3. Tolerates wet feet, part shade, and poor soils but yield will be less than under optimal conditions. Established plants are drought tolerant but appropriate care should be given for young whips.
