Our farm's goal is to use agriculture to regenerate the soil, increase biodiversity, and care for the land, water, & community. One example of how we do this is planting woody perennials - i.e. trees and shrubs. We focus on food-producing perennials (fruits, nuts, medicinals), but also plant native and other varieties just for their ecosystem services (nitrogen fixation, nutrient accumulation, wildlife habitat, pollinator support, etc.). This work sequesters carbon, improves soil health, increases water infiltration and prevents runoff, supports biodiversity, and more! It's also the most expensive thing we do, with a long time-horizon on payback (if ever), and requires ongoing expense for maintenance and monitoring.
