Little Bluestem Grass (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a hardy, warm-season native prairie grass for USDA Growing Zones 3–9. It thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained, moderately dry soil. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering once mature; cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring and remove weeds as needed. Little Bluestem grows actively from late spring through summer, with attractive seed heads and fall color extending into autumn. Native to much of North America, it provides valuable habitat and attracts native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for pollinator gardens, meadows, borders, and native landscapes.
